Muhammed Babangida Declines Tinubu’s Appointment as Chairman, Bank of Agriculture

Muhammed Babangida, son of former Nigerian military president General Ibrahim Babangida, has formally declined his appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BoA), despite being nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a letter addressed to the President and dated Monday, July 21, 2025, Babangida expressed deep appreciation for the honour of being considered for such a critical role in the nation’s agricultural and economic development.
“It is a true privilege to be thought worthy of such a strategic role,” Babangida wrote, adding that he was “deeply appreciative” of the President’s confidence in him.
However, after what he described as “careful reflection and consultation,” he respectfully declined the appointment. According to him, the decision was not made lightly but was based on “a convergence of personal and professional considerations” that would not allow him to serve with the level of focus and commitment the role demands at this time.
Despite turning down the appointment, Babangida reaffirmed his loyalty to the country’s progress and his admiration for the President’s leadership.
> “I remain fully committed to the vision of a prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria under your leadership. I continue to hold your administration in the highest regard and stand ready to support national development in other ways where my expertise may be of service,” he stated.
His letter has since drawn commendations online for what many have described as a respectful and principled decision.
The Bank of Agriculture is a critical institution in the country’s efforts to revitalize agriculture, create jobs, and reduce food insecurity. Babangida’s declination comes at a time when expectations are high for transformative leadership in the sector.
As of press time, the Presidency has yet to announce a replacement for the role.
