Governor Sule, AEDC Face Rising Public Anger as Lafia, Akwanga Communities Endure Months of Darkness

Residents of Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, have raised alarm over what they describe as a worsening and intolerable electricity crisis, calling on Governor Abdullahi Sule and relevant authorities to urgently intervene in the activities of the electricity distribution company serving the state.
The renewed outcry follows a strongly worded social media post by Labaran Abdullahi, a Lafia resident, who accused the power company of subjecting the city to “deliberate darkness” marked by prolonged outages, lack of communication, and continued billing despite the absence of supply.
According to residents, electricity supply in Lafia has become unpredictable and, in many cases, completely absent for days and even weeks.
“Sometimes light goes off for two days, sometimes for a week. There is no announcement, no explanation—just silence,” Abdullahi lamented.
He recalled that Lafia once enjoyed relatively stable power supply, enabling businesses to thrive and students to study at night, stressing that current complaints are based on a decline from previously improved conditions.
The situation has reportedly crippled economic and social activities across the city. Small-scale businesses such as barbing salons, tailoring shops, and phone-charging points are either shutting down or operating at huge losses due to the high cost of fueling generators. Hospitals and students are also said to be struggling, with many resorting to candles and alternative lighting. Despite this, residents say electricity bills continue to arrive “full and confident,” charging consumers for power they did not receive.
Similar complaints are emerging from Angwan Pandon in Akwanga Local Government Area, where residents are still grappling with prolonged outages linked to a damaged transformer.
Community members recall that the last major blackout was resolved not by the distribution company but through the intervention of an individual who personally purchased a transformer for the area. Today, that same transformer is damaged again, with no clear plan for replacement. Residents question why they should continue paying bills while also being expected to mobilize resources to fix power infrastructure.
The power crisis is not limited to Lafia and Akwanga. A report tracing TEC News sates that Kuchikau, particularly the Adamawa Area of the community in Nasarawa State, has also been enduring darkness and supply highly unreliable and unpredictable. A resident who has been in the area for few months now reported that electricity is hardly regular, been supplied despite harsh weather and intense heat.
“People dig boreholes just to survive, yet they must use generators to pump water because there is no light at all,” the resident said. “This is extreme hardship. Power is taken and restored whenever they like, without informing the public, while customers continue to pay heavy bills for darkness.”
As frustration mounts, residents are directing tough questions at state authorities. They are calling on Governor Abdullahi Sule, the Commissioner in charge of Power, and the Nasarawa State House of Assembly to clarify who is regulating the activities of the electricity distribution company operating in the state and what measures are being taken to protect citizens from what many now describe as exploitation and neglect.
“Electricity is not a favor; it is a responsibility,” Abdullahi stated in his post,
adding that while past efforts by the power company are acknowledged, they cannot justify the present situation.
With public anger rising across Lafia, Akwanga, and Kuchikau, residents warn that continued silence from authorities may further escalate tensions. They insist that Nasarawa State deserves transparency, accountability, and immediate action to restore reliable power supply and end what they describe as a painful era of paying for darkness.
