The Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State has expressed gratitude to the people of Enugu State for their support of the party and for having the guts to use their Permanent Voters Cards to reject misrule (PVCs).
The Labour Party added that Chief Chijioke Edeoga, its candidate for governor in the March 18 Enugu State governorship election, is resolute and would win back the support of the state’s populace.
In response to the results of the March 18, 2023, Enugu State Governorship Elections, which were finally announced on March 22, at the INEC State Collation Centre, Enugu, Dr. Mcginger Ibeneme, Spokesperson, Labour Party, Enugu State, expressed his gratitude.
Ibeneme admitted that he was a little disappointed with the election results, but he added: “Not because we weren’t declared winners, but because we came close, but they cheated as usual.”
“I am proud about how we fought every step of the way,” he said. We were able to demonstrate to the entire world that we had prevailed.
While he shone the light in the appropriate areas in the state, he claimed that Edeoga represents the fighting spirit of the oppressed people of Enugu State and Nigeria.
The spokesperson stated that the 1991 contest between Okwy Nwodo and Gbazuagu Nweke Gbazuagu would be the state’s final actual election.
“Enugu State is divided into three political zones and two cultural zones. Nsukka Zone and Enugu Zone are the cultural zones. Nsukka Zone remained a single senatorial district while Enugu Zone was divided into two senatorial districts.
There have been two governors of Nsukka Zone: Okwy Nwodo and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. Christian Onoh, Jim Nwobodo, Chimaroke Nnamani, and Sullivan Chime have all represented the ENUGU zone.
“However, since 1999, the ENUGU State PDP has divided the three political zones into governorship positions. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi finished the cycle from the ENUGU North zone after Chimaroke Nnamani and Sullivan Chime went first from the ENUGU East zone.
“However, the issue we face is that some elements insist that no candidate for governor or even senator can be from a specific constituency.
They also maintain that some people, even those from the’superior’ constituency, are not eligible to run for elective office. They will go to any length, which may help to explain why Chief Oyibo Chukwu was killed, he said.
When Edeoga expressed interest in running for governor, according to Ibeneme, people started to pursue him. He was “cajoled, harassed, and threatened.”
“Edeoga stood his ground, insisting that no one could stop him from running for any positions for which he is qualified. I clearly recall that he declined Prof. Barth Nnaji’s invitation to accept the LP ticket, but Nnaji, who is considered an elder statesman, gave him the go-ahead to run as a young, energetic man instead.
“Edeoga is a person who is very focused. He is composed and persuasive. Our biggest problem was getting funding, and they made fun of us for it. Edeoga, however, was the type of person you could do anything for without expecting rewards.
“Edeoga primarily used grassroots mobilization, which, in retrospect, is the most successful strategy. Out of the 275 wards, we visited 244; we could have finished the rounds, but time was of the essence.
“In each of the wards we visited, we interacted with the locals and compiled a list of what they expected from our government, which we then documented. Our goal was to meet the people’s actual needs rather than burden them with pointless projects, he said.
The spokesperson explained that the delay in the release of our manifesto was due to the need to visit every ward in the state in order to compile a people’s manifesto, which would list the demands of the people of Enugu State, ward by ward and community by community.
He claimed that Edeoga demonstrated unmatched leadership throughout our election-related struggle.
Ibeneme remarked that Edeoga maintains his composure even in the face of severe provocation and said, “I never for once saw him lose his cool, even when he was upset, during the nearly one year we worked together.
To the disappointment of all well-intentioned Enugu residents and Nigerians in general, the results have been announced. Rest assured that we will pursue our mission through the legal system,” he said.
