A 21-year-old man who stole a phone has been given a seven-year prison sentence by Adamawa State’s Upper Area Court 4.
The sentence does not include a fine option.
Abdulaziz Yusuf, the defendant, had pleaded guilty to the charge brought against him, and Ibrahim Ulenda, the court’s presiding judge, found him guilty and sentenced him.
Sergent Kabiru Abubakar of the Nigeria Police, the prosecutor, had earlier presented Abdulaziz Yusuf before the court after he was alleged to have taken a student’s phone by force.

Facts on the matter indicate that he had earlier in the month, on February 3, stormed Doubeli Secondary School, located in Yola North Local Government Area and threatened a student, identified as Aliyu Isa, with a knife and snatched his handset valued at N6, 500.
In response to the victim’s alarm, other students came running, caught up with the criminal as he attempted to flee the school grounds, and arrested him.
Later, he was turned over to the nearby Doubeli Divisional Police headquarters, where investigators charged him in court and conducted an investigation.

Abdulaziz admitted to the crime in court, and the prosecutor then called a witness—a student from Doubeli Secondary School—to vouch for the defendant’s guilty plea.
After that, the judge sentenced him to seven years in prison without the possibility of a fine.
