MultiChoice Slashes DStv Decoder Price by 50%, Launches Free Upgrade Promo Amid Subscription Decline

TEC News! Lagos, Nigeria – June 25, 2025 |

MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a significant 50 per cent reduction in the price of its DStv decoder, dropping the cost from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000. The company says the price cut is part of a broader strategy to win back subscribers and reward customer loyalty.

The announcement, made on Tuesday by MultiChoice Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, comes amid concerns over declining subscription numbers and increased competition in the pay-TV space.

We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day,” Ugbe stated. “The ‘We Got You’ campaign is about making premium content more accessible and showing that DStv offers something for everyone, not just football fans.”

He noted that the repositioning aims to promote content discovery across various genres, including movies, drama, kids’ programming, and news. “This means more channels, more shows, and more reasons to tune in every day,” he added.

As part of the new incentives, the company is also offering a free upgrade to the next subscription tier for customers who renew their current packages in full between June 16 and July 31, 2025.

MultiChoice explained that both the decoder price slash and the free upgrade promo were introduced in response to the harsh economic realities facing many Nigerians.

The development follows a major drop in the company’s subscriber base, with 1.4 million customers reportedly lost between March 2023 and March 2025.

It would be recalled that MultiChoice Nigeria came under fire for implementing three price increases within a 12-month period — first in April 2023, then in November 2023, and most recently in April 2024, which took effect on May 1.

Despite the challenges, the company says it remains committed to delivering value and adapting to the needs of its growing and diverse audience.
