Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State, claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari was duped into thinking that the Naira redesign policy was intended to guarantee free and fair elections in 2023 by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
According to reports, El Rufai asserted that the redesign of the Naira is a scheme to thwart the upcoming elections and appoint an interim administration while making these remarks during a state-wide broadcast on Thursday night.
El-Rufai called the initiative “mindless” and claimed that it has resulted in untold hardship for the ordinary people, who he claimed are the policy’s victims. Additionally, he criticized Godwin Emefiele, governor of the CBN.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria frequently hinted in official briefings to the President that the policy also targets politicians who have amassed sizable war chests for buying votes during elections.
According to El Rufai, “it is now obvious that the President has been duped by the Central Bank of Nigeria and some elements in his government into buying into this overarching narrative, in the name of ensuring free and fair elections in 2023.”
