At Rijiyar Lemu in Kano State’s Ungogo Local Government Area, officers of the Nigerian Navy managed to free no less than 18 trafficked individuals.
Additionally, two alleged human traffickers were detained during an operation on Saturday by the internal security team at the Nigerian Navy Finance and Logistics College.
The Navy stated that the rescue and arrest were made as a result of a tip from one of its officers whose sister was one of those being trafficked in a post on its official Facebook page on Monday night.
It stated, in part, “On Saturday at around 10 o’clock at Rijiyar Lemu in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State, the Nigerian Navy rescued 18 victims of human trafficking. ”
The rescue was carried out in response to a tip from Dawakin Tofa, an officer at the Nigerian Navy Finance and Logistics College, whose sister was being trafficked through Kano on the way to France and Libya. The NNFLC internal security team got to work as soon as they received the information.
The victims who were housed in an incomplete building were rescued after careful reconnaissance in the Rijiyar Lemu and Bachirawa areas. In addition, while some of the alleged traffickers remain at large, two of them were arrested.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has been given the victims and suspects, according to the Navy, for further investigation.
“As a result, the victims were kept under the College’s care, receiving medication and other necessary care. Additionally, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons’ Kano Zonal Office and other relevant Kano entities were informed. As a result, on Monday, February 6, 2023, the suspects and victims were turned over to NAPTIP for questioning and further action, according to the Nigerian Navy.
