NEC declares Abba Yusuf winner of Kano governorship election

Malam Abba Yusuf, a candidate for the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), has been proclaimed the victor of the Kano State governorship election held on March 18 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Abba defeated Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the governorship candidate for the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, by a margin of 1,019,602 votes, according to the Chief Returning Officer for the election, Professor Ahmed Doko Ibrahim, who announced the results at precisely 6:47 am local time at the INEC headquarters in Kano state.

“That Abba, Kabir Yusuf having scored the highest number of votes and having satisfied the requirements of the law is returned elected dated this day 20, March, 2023,” declared the Professor.

According to INEC guideline 2, the Chief Returning Officer explained that because the confirmed incidents of election-related violence occurred after the vote, the lead margin was unaffected.

The winning vote’s difference is 128, 897.

Out of the 44 Local Government Areas in the state, NNPP won 30, while APC took home 14.

There were 2,320,955 votes cast in total, 1,977,872 of which were valid, and 27,092 of which were invalid.

Dr. Bappa Bichi, the NNPP’s party representative at the collation center, expressed satisfaction with the results and claimed that the declaration of the results reflected the people of Kano’s will.

“It is a statement of our commitment and will to democracy. Opportunity for Kano state and Nigeria in general to achieve peace, unity, and development,” he said.

Suleiman Bichi, the APC’s party agent, responded differently, emphasizing that the party would examine the law’s provisions and take the necessary action while urging the people of Kano to maintain their composure.

The Chief Returning Officer’s interpretation of guideline number 2 in place of guideline number 6 is rejected. All Kano residents, especially those who support our party, should keep their composure, though. There are still days to win, so losing an election is not the end of the world, he said.
