Ogun woman sets herself on fire over N70,000 loan

A woman allegedly set herself on fire in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, because she was unable to repay an N70,000 loan she had taken out from a microfinance bank.

The woman, identified as Mama Dada, set herself and her rented apartment on fire in Abeokuta’s Oke-Keesi neighborhood.

She allegedly killed herself to escape the humiliation that would come from her inability to pay back the N70,000 loan.

The deceased is alleged to have locked herself in after the boy was asked to leave, doused the entire house in gasoline, including herself, and then set it on fire over the weekend. She is also said to have sent her last child to buy her fuel.

The State General Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta, had received her body.

In response to the incident, Olumide Aderinokun, a senatorial candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun Central, expressed sadness over it.

Aderinokun bemoaned the suffering women had experienced as a result of the loan program and characterized the deceased’s action as tragic.
According to reports, a lot of traders in Ogun State had turned to usurers for assistance because they were struggling financially.

The majority of borrowers fall behind on their repayment obligations due to the nation’s weak economy, and they often endure extremely humiliating treatment like being arrested and being locked up in restrooms.
