Ahmed Lawan, the president of the Senate, is now the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Yobe north senate seat.
The APC filed a lawsuit to contest Bashir Machina’s selection as the party’s candidate for the Yobe North Senatorial District.
The party steadfastly maintained that Ahmad Lawan, the president of the Nigerian Senate, was the legitimate senatorial candidate for Yobe North in the upcoming general election.
The party’s attorney, Sepiribo Peters, argued that the primary election that took place on May 28, 2018, and resulted in Machina was in violation of the Electoral Act 2022 at the appeal’s most recent hearing.
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, according to Peters, did not nominate one Danjuma Manga to conduct the aforementioned primary election.

He informed the court that the APC postponed the primary election due to irregularities seen during the process.
He insisted that Lawan was chosen as the party’s legitimate candidate in the other primary that took place on June 9 and was overseen by the APC NWC.
The Senate President did not contest the lawsuits in both the trial and lower courts, according to Machina’s attorney Sarafa Yusuf, who urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the appeal for lack of merit.
Additionally, he noted that Manga, the person who oversaw the primary election in which Machina triumphed, was a member of the committee established by the NWC to oversee the process.
The APC had filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal in Abuja, seeking to overturn the decision of the lower court designating Machina as the party’s candidate for Yobe North. However, the panel led by the panel’s president, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, ruled that the appeal was an abuse of the court system.

However, in a majority decision issued on Monday, the Supreme Court accepted the APC’s appeal against Bashir Machina’s candidacy.
The Supreme Court ruled that Lawan is the APC’s legitimate candidate for the Yobe North Senatorial District.
