The Peter Obi-Yusuf Datti Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) has reaffirmed that unless the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) gives its lawyers access to records from the contested presidential election on February 25, its supporters won’t abandon their planned national protest.
According to report, ONEC declared Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, the winner of the election on March 1.
Tinubu received 8,794,726 votes, according to the results announced by the commission’s chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. Atiku received 6,984,520 votes, followed by Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), who received 6,101,533 votes, and Rabi’u Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who received 1,496,687 votes.
The presidential race featured 18 candidates in total.
Before Mr. Tinubu was named the winner and during the collation of the results, the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had rejected the election results.
Both parties have made court appearances in an effort to contest the results of the election and Tinubu’s victory.
Additionally, they criticized the electoral commission for failing to post the polling unit results on the INEC result viewing (IReV) portal prior to the start of the results collation process.
The parties insisted that it is a component of the promises that the commission has repeatedly made and that it is supported by a provision of the Electoral Act of 2022.
Speaking to the media, the spokesperson for the Obi-Datti campaign council, Yunusa Tanko, reaffirmed that their supporters had already been mobilized to occupy INEC offices across the country.
Tanko charged INEC with disobeying the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal’s directive to give Obi and the party access to the authenticated copies of the materials used to conduct the election.
We purposefully chose not to set a date for the protest because we wanted INEC to have until Monday to respond to us first.
“But by the grace of God, our supporters will take to the streets when they (INEC) fail to do what they are supposed to do. There’s no turning back, he declared.
Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s nominee for president, and other party officials demonstrated against INEC last week in Abuja.
