Tragedy as Truck Crushes Eight to Death in Akungba-Akoko

TEC News|Akungba-Akoko|October 22, 2025.

Tragedy struck on Tuesday evening in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, when a truck loaded with cement lost control and crushed eight people to death, including a pregnant woman.

The fatal incident occurred near the popular Holy Trinity Church, sending shockwaves through the community as residents and students of Adekunle Ajasin University trooped to the scene in panic.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck was descending a steep hill when its brakes reportedly failed. It rammed into a barricade before veering off the road, trapping several victims beneath the vehicle.

An eyewitness who spoke under condition of anonymity recounted,

“The trailer was coming from the top of the hill. We couldn’t say if the barricade was open or not, but some people said it destroyed the barricade. About five people died instantly, and we feared more were trapped under the vehicle.”

Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), alongside other emergency responders, arrived at the scene to recover the bodies and clear the wreckage.

In an official statement, the FRSC confirmed that eight persons — comprising five males, two females, and a male child — lost their lives in the lone crash. The agency identified brake failure and loss of control as the major causes of the accident.

The incident has once again reignited concerns over frequent truck-related accidents along the Akungba axis, especially on the treacherous slope leading into the town.
