The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) urged President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday to provide specifics regarding the steps he was taking to immediately abide by the Supreme Court decision extending the validity of the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes. The organization also urged him to instruct the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to continue accepting the notes from Nigerians.
SERAP also urged the president to publicly direct the CBN to immediately and successfully implement the Supreme Court ruling ordering an end to the cash withdrawal limits imposed by banks because such restrictions infringe upon people’s freedom to use their property as they please.

The Supreme Court had directed the CBN to immediately reissue the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, and SERAP urged him to disclose the steps he was taking to implement that order.
In a letter dated March 4, 2023 and signed by Kolawole Oluwadare, the Deputy Director of SERAP, the organization claimed that there was a compelling public interest in knowing the specifics of the steps the government and the CBN were taking to effectively and satisfactorily comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling.
In part, the letter stated: “We would appreciate it if the requested information and suggested measures were implemented within seven days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. ”
In the event that we have not heard from you by then, SERAP will take all necessary legal action to compel your government to abide by our demands. Infractions of citizens’ rights have been exacerbated by your government’s implementation of the CBN policy on the redesign of the national currency.

In the interests of transparency, justice, and upholding the rule of law, Nigerians have a right to information about the extent to which your government and the CBN have complied with the Supreme Court’s ruling.
