Police vow to apprehend assassins of APC campaign director in Rivers State

Police have vowed to apprehend those responsible for the murder of Chisom Lenard, the APC’s director general for the Ahoada West Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State.

Lenard, who was also the local Ward 10 APC leader, was shot while attempting to stop alleged hoodlums wearing police camouflage from stealing election supplies early on Saturday.

Sogbeye Eli, a spokesman for the Rivers APC 2023 Campaign Council, claimed that the thugs shot him dead as soon as they opened fire on him.

“Yes, it is true; Chisom, our campaign coordinator for Rivers State’s Ahoada-West Local Government Area, was killed while attempting to apprehend criminals wearing police uniforms who attempted to steal election materials. He was shot by them, and they killed him,” Eli said.

“The deceased Chisom Lennard of Ubeta community in Ahoada West LGA of Rivers State was the Ward 10 Leader of the APC and Tonye Cole Campaign Coordinator for Ahoada West Local Council until his death today at the governorship and state House of Assembly elections.”

According to Grace Iringe-Koko, a spokeswoman for the Rivers State police, the Commissioner of Police has directed a prompt investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the act.

Iringe-Koko stated in a statement, “The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Election duties in Rivers State Command, CP Echeng Echeng, has tasked operatives of the Command to deploy all necessary investigative and human resources to ensure that the murderers of the Campaign Director-General for the All Progressives Congress in Ahoada West in Rivers State, Hon. Chisom Lenard, are brought to book.

Lenard was allegedly assassinated on Saturday afternoon in his LGA during the governorship and state house of assembly elections by unidentified gunmen who fled the scene.

“From information gathered, the Campaign DG was shot by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in the afternoon of Saturday, 18th March 2023,” Iringe-Koko said.

The police commissioner has expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and promised to bring those responsible for the heinous crime to justice.
