Breaking: Nigeria’s Defence Minister Resigns

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health-related concerns.

His resignation was confirmed on Monday in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Badaru informed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of his decision in a letter dated December 1, explaining that his health condition had deteriorated, making it difficult for him to continue in office.

President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and commended the former minister for his service to the nation. The President is expected to submit the name of a new Defence Minister to the Senate before the end of the week.

Badaru, 63, served as Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before joining President Tinubu’s cabinet on August 21, 2023.

His exit comes as the federal government intensifies efforts to address the country’s security challenges, following the President’s declaration of a national security emergency. Further briefings are expected on the administration’s plan to reinforce national security and strengthen defence operations.
