A shocking and deeply disturbing discovery was made on January 20, 2026, in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, where the skeletal remains of a man were found inside his residence, nearly four years after his death, without anyone noticing his absence.
The deceased was later identified as Aderemi Abiola, a Nigerian man believed to have died around 2022. His remains were found in his house located at Idi Orogbo, Adeosun, Life Forte area of Awotan, Apete axis of Ibadan.
According to community sources, the property had long appeared abandoned. Thick bushes and weeds had overtaken the compound, the driveway was swallowed by grass, and the fence was barely visible. Neighbours reportedly assumed the homeowner had travelled, relocated, or simply chosen to live elsewhere. No missing person report was filed, and no alarm was raised over his prolonged absence.
Residents described Abiola as a quiet and private individual who lived alone and kept largely to himself. His reclusive lifestyle, coupled with the general busyness of urban life, made it easy for him to disappear without drawing attention.
The grim discovery occurred when members of the community decided to clear the overgrown compound, citing security concerns over criminals and reptiles possibly using the abandoned house as a hideout. After obtaining police permission, they gained access to the building.
Upon entry, a strong and disturbing odour immediately suggested death. Inside one of the rooms, police and residents found fully skeletonized human remains lying on a bed. The body had decomposed completely, leaving only bones arranged in the natural posture of a person at rest.
A particularly haunting detail was the presence of a mobile phone still in the deceased’s hand, raising painful questions about his final moments, whether he attempted to call for help, whether the phone was dead, or whether no one responded.
Police officers who secured the scene confirmed there were no signs of forced entry, struggle, or violence. The house was reportedly locked from the inside, and no blood or broken furniture was found, ruling out foul play.
Inside the compound, Abiola’s car was also discovered parked and overgrown with vegetation, suggesting it had not been moved for years. During a search of the room, officers found a wallet containing a driver’s licence, which helped authorities confirm the identity of the deceased.
Investigators concluded that Abiola likely died of natural causes and had remained undiscovered for approximately four years.
The incident has sparked renewed conversations about loneliness, social isolation, and the weakening of community bonds in modern society.
