Iyorchia Ayu reportedly did not want to step down from his position as the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during the emergency meeting that was held on Tuesday by the leadership of the party.
It was reported that Ayu was reluctant to step down from his position as PDP National Chairman, even after the court order that prohibited him from representing himself as the party’s leader had been brought to his attention.
He argued that the move to ask him to resign was done in bad faith by those who made the request.
However, some of the other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) were able to convince him to change his mind, which in the end resulted in the appointment of Ambassador Umar Damagum, the Deputy National Chairman North, as the acting Chairman of the PDP.
The members of the NWC were able to persuade Ayu to step down and pursue the legal route, according to a source who was privy to the discussions that took place during the meeting and who was quoted by Daily Trust.
It has come to our attention that the Governors running on the platform of the party are also in favor of Ayu’s replacement.
In light of the fact that everyone present at the NWC meeting supported the idea that he should be removed from his position, the embattled chairman later came into the party headquarters to carry some of his personal belongings.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Ayu could be found in his office at the party headquarters packing his personal belongings.
It was reported that the former national chairman, who was present along with the national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, moved his belongings directly into his office while his security aides took control of strategic locations throughout the Wadata Plaza as he moved them. Samuel Anyanwu was the national secretary.
After the clear-out, at the PDP headquarters, the acting Chairman Damagum revealed that he would soon be having a meeting with the party’s NWC, possibly for a review of the situation at the party and the several suspensions authorized in the twilight of Ayu’s departure from office. Damagum also disclosed that he would soon be having a meeting with the party’s NWC.
