The 2023 Dan David Prize winner and distinguished professor of history and African diaspora studies Saheed Aderinto has severed ties with the Twitter account that appeared to have humiliated Bola Tinubu after a message of congratulations.
Aderinto, who only maintains a Facebook account, distanced himself from the Twitter account @AderintoO on Monday.
After responding to Tinubu’s congratulations by wishing the President-elect would restore the “stolen mandate,” the Twitter handle, which appears to be a parody, received backlash.

The parody account tweeted on Monday, “Thanks anyway for the recognition, I hope you restore Our stolen Mandate.”
The parody account Obi “My President-elect” sent him a tweet on Sunday thanking him for congratulating Aderinto on the honor.

Aderinto stated on Monday night that he did not make the statements in response to the development.

“I’ve noticed that someone has created a fake Twitter account using my name. My Twitter account is empty. Neither did he make those claims, he wrote.
The Dan David Prize selection committee praised Aderinto’s work for “placing African history at the cutting edge of diverse literatures in the history of sexuality, nonhumans, and violence, noting that it is exceptional to see a single person leading scholarship in all of these fields,” as they did in their statement of appreciation for the author.
