A group of concerned citizens from Benue State has written an open letter to President Tinubu, urging him to declare a state of emergency in the state due to the ongoing mass killings and terrorist attacks.

 

The letter, signed by the Concerned Citizens of Benue State (CCBS), highlights the devastating impact of the attacks, which have resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives and the displacement of many more.

The group cites the recent massacre in Yelwata, where over 100 innocent Nigerians were brutally murdered by terrorist herdsmen, as a stark example of the state’s inability to protect its citizens.

The CCBS added their opinion about the current governor’s competence in handling the security of the state as the letter reveals :

“It is with a broken heart but a firm voice that we tell you today: Governor Hyacinth Alia is overwhelmed. His government has proven incapable of protecting the lives and property of Benue citizens. His leadership is marked by silence, blame games, and political distractions while blood continues to flow.”

 

The group demands that the President take immediate action, including:

 

1. Declaring a state of emergency in Benue State, placing security and protection under direct federal coordination.

2. Deploying a special joint military-security task force to reclaim farmlands, forests, and communities.

3. Initiating an independent inquiry into the failure of Benue’s current leadership to respond adequately to the crisis.

4. Providing federal humanitarian relief and rehabilitation support to internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the state.

 

The group emphasizes that every delay costs lives and that the President’s government must take decisive action to protect all citizens, regardless of tribe, region, or religion.

 

The letter concludes, “History will remember what you do next. Enough is enough. Declare a State of Emergency on Benue State now.”

“OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

 

Subject: Declaration of a State of Emergency in Benue State Over Unending Massacres

 

Your Excellency,

 

With the deepest sense of sorrow and urgency, we write to you today on behalf of thousands of voiceless, grieving, and terrified citizens of Benue State, to demand your immediate and decisive intervention in the ongoing mass killings ravaging our communities.

 

Once again, Benue is bleeding.

 

On June 13, 2025, over 100 innocent Nigerians were brutally murdered in Yelwata, Nyiev district of Guma Local Government Area, by terrorist herdsmen. This is not an isolated incident. It is part of a longstanding pattern of genocide against our people who are peaceful farmers, market women, children, and elders slaughtered in their sleep, hacked down on their farms, gunned down in their homes.

 

Sir, how long must we count the dead before the nation acts?

 

We have exhausted our tears. We have buried more people than we have harvested crops. The entire Guma axis, Logo,Oturkpo, Apa, Agatu, Makurdi outskirts, and parts of Kwande and Katsina-Ala have become killing fields. Our people are no longer living,they are merely waiting for their turn to die.

 

It is with a broken heart but a firm voice that we tell you today: Governor Hyacinth Alia is overwhelmed. His government has proven incapable of protecting the lives and property of Benue citizens. His leadership is marked by silence, blame games, and political distractions while blood continues to flow.

 

This is not about party lines. This is not about politics. This is about human lives and a region under siege. If this were happening in Lagos or Abuja, we know the urgency and force that would accompany it.

 

We therefore demand, without reservation, that:

 

1. You immediately declare a State of Emergency in Benue State, placing the security and protection of lives under direct federal coordination.

 

2. Deploy a special joint military-security task force to reclaim our farmlands, forests, and communities.

 

3. Initiate an independent inquiry into the failure of Benue’s current leadership to respond adequately to this worsening crisis.

 

4. Ensure that internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the state receive federal humanitarian relief and rehabilitation support.

 

Your Excellency, every delay costs us more lives. Every silence emboldens the killers. We will not stand by while an entire state is slowly wiped out. If your government is truly committed to the protection of all citizens—regardless of tribe, region, or religion—Benue must not be left to die.

 

History will remember what you do next.
