Breaking: National Leadership Backs Imo State Chapter in Protest Against Multiple Levies on Private Schools

The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) Nigeria has declared its full support for the Imo State Chapter in its stand against what it described as “stifling policies, multiple levies, and excessive taxes” imposed on private schools in the state.
In a letter jointly signed by the National President, Samira Jibir, PhD, FNAE, and the National Secretary, Dr. Kayode Adeyemi, the association expressed deep concern over recent policies being implemented by the Imo State Ministry of Education. According to NAPPS, the measures threaten the survival of private schools and violate the principle of stakeholders’ consultation and engagement.
The association warned that such policies could place heavy financial burdens on school proprietors, potentially leading to school closures, reduced enrolment, and negative impacts on teachers, students, and families who depend on these institutions for quality education.
The letter also stressed that the policies run contrary to the Federal Government’s efforts to reduce the high rate of out-of-school children (OOSC) in Nigeria.
“These practices do not only jeopardize the efforts of established educational institutions, but also diminish the quality of education available to Nigerian students without taking into consideration the crucial role played by private schools in the educational landscape,” the letter stated.
NAPPS further called on the Imo State Government to adopt a collaborative approach by engaging stakeholders in meaningful dialogue rather than implementing blanket measures that could be detrimental to the education sector.
The association reaffirmed its solidarity with the Imo State Chapter, led by Dame Nkeiruka Happiness Uhegbu, PhD, and praised her leadership and advocacy in defending the interests of private school proprietors.
NAPPS maintained that it will continue to push for fair and reasonable policies that protect educators, sustain schools, and prioritize the welfare of students across Nigeria.
