The United States military carried out large-scale strikes inside Venezuela early Saturday, striking multiple locations in and around the capital, Caracas, and announced that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured and flown out of the country, in what U.S. leaders describe as a decisive action against alleged criminal and narcotics activities.
U.S. President Donald Trump said in early-morning statements that American forces launched a major military operation against Venezuela. According to Trump, which marked the most direct U.S. military intervention in Latin America in decades, Maduro and his wife were detained by U.S. forces and transported out of Venezuela.
The White House indicated that elite units, including U.S. special operations forces, were involved in the capture, and that the operation was conducted “in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement.”
Residents of Caracas reported a series of explosions early Saturday, with loud blasts heard across the city, blackout conditions in some neighborhoods, and sightings of low-flying aircraft. Venezuelan authorities said explosions hit military sites and other areas around the capital and neighboring states.
The reported strikes also triggered panicked scenes on city streets as people reacted to the blasts and ensuing unrest.
The Venezuelan government condemned the U.S. military action as an “act of military aggression” and violating its sovereignty, declaring a national state of emergency. Vice President Delcy Rodríguez said the government was unaware of the current whereabouts or condition of Maduro and Flores, demanding proof of life and calling on citizens to mobilize in protest.
Venezuelan officials insisted that the strikes targeted both military and civilian areas and vowed to resist what they labeled an invasion.
Tensions between Washington and Caracas had been rising throughout 2025 as the U.S. government ramped up pressure on Maduro’s regime, imposing sanctions on Venezuelan oil firms and attacking vessels suspected of involvement in narcotics trafficking as part of a broader anti-drug campaign. Earlier U.S. administrations had accused Maduro of overseeing a “narco-state” and charged him in U.S. courts with narco-terrorism and related offenses.
This operation represents a significant escalation in the conflict and raises questions about regional stability, international law, and the future of Venezuela’s government.
World governments and international organizations have begun responding to the developments, with some condemning the strikes and others calling for restraint while more information emerges. Leaders in the region have expressed alarm at the unprecedented use of force.
In Washington, senior U.S. officials said further details will be released as the situation unfolds, including the legal process under which Maduro and his wife will be handled.
