The UN reported that in the ongoing conflict in Sudan between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), at least 180 people have died and 1,800 have been injured.
Volker Perthes, the UN’s special envoy to Sudan, noted that the country’s situation is “very fluid, so it’s very difficult to say where the balance is shifting to.”
Despite calls for a temporary cease-fire from various world leaders, including the UN, the conflict, which broke out on Saturday, has persisted and is now in its fourth day.
When addressing the media in New York, Mr. Perthes stated that “the two sides who are fighting are not giving the impression that they want mediation for a peace between them right away.”

Buildings and facilities in the already torn nation have been destroyed as a result of the fighting, including diplomatic personnel.
The EU Ambassador to Sudan was attacked in his own home, according to a tweet from Josep Borell, the EU’s head of foreign policy.
The Vienna Convention has been gravely violated by this. According to international law, the Sudanese government is required to provide security for diplomatic facilities and personnel.
Similar to this, an attack on a convoy of US diplomatic vehicles bearing obvious markings occurred, and an initial report connected the attackers to the RSF. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the passengers in the car are secure.

In an emergency meeting on Sunday, the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC) expressed concern that the situation in Sudan has “reached a dangerous level and could erupt into a full-blown conflict, undermining the advancements made towards a peaceful transition to democracy and stability in Sudan.”
It denounced the hostilities and demanded an end to them while pleading with the nations in the area and other parties to take an interest in the situation to support ongoing efforts to put the nation back on the path to a constitutional order.
In a related meeting, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) urged both sides to immediately and unconditionally halt hostilities, defuse tensions, permit unrestricted humanitarian access, and ensure Sudanese citizens could observe the holy month of Ramadan without interference.

The group decided to dispatch a high-level delegation, including Salva Kiir Mayardit, president of the Republic of South Sudan, William Ruto, president of the Republic of Kenya, and Ismail Guelleh, president of the Republic of Djibouti, as soon as possible to Khartoum to meet with the two leaders and restart talks on all outstanding issues, including security and military reform, and to report back to the Assembly.
In the shortest amount of time possible, they would also call an Ordinary Session of the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government, either in person or virtually, to discuss IGAD institutional matters and other pressing regional concerns.
