TEC News|Abuja|7th September, 2025.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has officially concluded his tenure, bringing to a close his second and final five-year term, which ends in November 2025. His departure marks a key leadership transition within the Commission.

Following his exit, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned legal practitioner and National Commissioner at INEC, has assumed office as Acting Chairman. She also serves as head of the Commission’s Legal Services, Clearance, and Complaints Committee.

Professor Yakubu announced his decision to step down during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Tuesday. His exit comes in line with constitutional term limits, after previously completing a full first term and a second tenure reappointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate in 2020.

In his farewell remarks, Professor Yakubu expressed gratitude to INEC staff and the RECs, praising their dedication and support, and commended their collective efforts toward strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process.
