INEC states, BVAS, when snatched, would be deactivated

The Independent National Electoral Commission has guaranteed that the Bimodal Voter Registration System cannot be manipulated with less than 16 days until the general elections.

On Wednesday, Lawrence Bayode, INEC’s deputy director of information and communications technology, appeared on Channels Television’s special election program, The 2023 Verdict.

Elections in the past have included violence by hoodlums and ballot box snatching.

In order to prevent anyone who stole the device on election day from being able to tamper with votes, Bayode claims that the BVAS will be deactivated from the back-end.
He declared, “We have a system in place that can deactivate that specific BVAS if it is stolen.

“We deactivate it so that whoever steals the device won’t be able to use it for anything, as the device automatically pushes the accreditation data without the operator having to press a button. It sends that accreditation data to the back end while it is not in use.

According to Bayode, the polling unit officer will report the incident if criminals take the device to other locations where they believe they can manipulate the data on the device.

He said, “If such a thing occurs, the PO reports and from the back-end, that device is deactivated so that the person who took that device away will not be able to use it.”
