Popular Nigerian Lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has condemn the present democracy been practiced in Nigeria and recommends a new system of government that can ensure inclusion and deliver dividends of governance.

Saying this on Arise News popular program, ‘the morning show’ on Friday, Agbakoba says that the present democracy been practice is not working as it has not benefited even him as a person. Olisa said he is 72years old now and has never benefited anything from the country Nigeria which is something that require a review.

 

He said Alex Ekwueme Panel proposed the present 6 Geopolitical Zones been operated in Nigeria but he would propose 8 Geopolitical Zones with one from the South and also North Central, suggesting that this would ensure inclusion where every zone would be encouraged to participate in governance and so benefits development.

In his words, Olisa Agbakoba says “If a patient is not recovering, you change approach . We should jettison the present western Liberal Democracy because it is not working. We can’t just accept the western democracy imposed on us by the west which is not even working. We should consider what is local and what can work in our country. I will propose 8 Geopolitical Zones with the North Central and one from the South. This will ensure inclusion where development can be encouraged”

He further said that “China is working , middle east is working and they are not in democracy. “I am 72 now and till now, I have never gotten a dime from Nigeria as a benefit”. He emphasize that until a change is made where the western democracy model is dropped and we pick what can consider our locals, Nigeria would remain as it is.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria also said the bill been considered to make voting compulsory cannot work.

“If you want the people to vote, promise them dividends”.

Olisa Agbakoba, is the former president of the Nigerian Bar Association from 2006 to 2008 and a founding partner of Olisa Agbakoba and Associates, a leading maritime specialist law firm in Lagos. He is also the founder of Nigeria’s foremost human rights organization, the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO). He became known through his work in human rights and democracy movement in Nigeria. He was also the founder of United Action for Democracy and the Zambian pan-African human rights organization AfroNet. He was a defender for the Civil Rights activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa who was executed and was arrested several times because of his pro – democratic activities.
