Nasarawa Assembly Passes Menstrual Hygiene Products Bill Into Law, what it means

House of Assembly, Nasarawa State has passed into law a Bill for an Act to Provide for Menstrual Hygiene Products for Girls in the State’s Public Schools by Nasarawa State Government and other Related Matters Therewith.
The Speaker of the House, Dr Danladi Jatau, announced the passage of the bill during plenary on Tuesday in Lafia.

 

The speaker commended the sponsor of the bill, Dr Hajarat Danyaro Ibrahim (APC- Nassarawa Central) for initiating the bill.
Jatau said that the bill was timely to address the plight of girls in public schools in the state.
“A Bill for a Law to Provide for Menstrual Hygiene Products for Girls in Nasarawa State Public Schools by Nasarawa State Government and Other Related Therewith” is read for third time and passed.

 

He then directed the Clerk of the House to provide a clean copy of the bill for Gov. Abdullahi Sule’s assent.
Earlier, the Majority Leader of the House, Mr Suleiman Azara, moved a motion for the bill to scale third reading and was seconded by Mr Luka Iliya Zhekaba, the Minority Leader of the House.
The House unanimously passed the bill and to be assented by the state’s Governor, abdullahi Sule.

This legislation mandates the provision of free menstrual hygiene products to girls attending Nasarawa State public schools. This bill was passed on May 6, 2025, and is now in effect. 

Key details about the bill include to ensure girls in public schools have access to menstrual hygiene products, addressing issues like absenteeism and menstrual hygiene management.  
The bill also requires the Nasarawa State Government to provide free menstrual hygiene products in public schools.
This legislation aims to improve hygiene, reduce absenteeism, and promote women’s development.  
Bauchi State also passed a similar bill in March 2025 to establish sanitary pad banks in schools and correctional facilities.
