A new report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed alarming figures showing that over 2.2 million people were kidnapped in Nigeria within the last one year — a number that exceeds the entire population of several countries.
According to the data, the number of people abducted in Nigeria in the past year is higher than the populations of the following nations:

- Guinea-Bissau – 1,663,000
- Estonia – 1,360,546

The report also paints an even grimmer picture regarding fatalities. A staggering 614,937 people were reportedly killed in Nigeria within the same period — a figure that dwarfs the total reported deaths in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which is estimated at 67,000. This implies that Nigeria recorded nearly ten times more deaths than the Russia-Ukraine conflict in a comparable timeframe.
Security experts and citizens alike have expressed deep concerns about the figures, calling it a wake-up call for urgent and sustained national and international action to curb the escalating insecurity across the country.
