Nigerians Demand Price Reductions Across Sectors Despite Falling Production Costs

A fresh wave of public frustration is sweeping across Nigeria as citizens call out bread bakers, food vendors, and other manufacturers for refusing to lower prices despite significant drops in production costs.
The latest spotlight comes from Jos-based Hausa activist, Aliyu Shuaibu, who criticized bread sellers for keeping prices high even after the cost of flour — a major component in bread production — fell drastically. While flour once climbed to ₦80,000–₦90,000, it has now dropped to ₦35,000–₦40,000. Yet, the price of bread on the streets remains unchanged.
Shuaibu noted that bakers were swift to increase bread prices when the market was unstable but have failed to apply the same energy now that conditions have improved. He urged Nigerians to demand fairness and accountability from producers, insisting that retail prices should reflect the current reality of the market.
Economic analysts believe the concern extends beyond the baking industry where snacks such as cakes, pies, rolls et- cetera continue to be on high price, Several sectors, from household goods to essential commodities, continue to sell at peak inflation prices despite lower input costs. Consumers say the trend is deepening financial strain on families already battling high living expenses.
Civil groups and consumer advocates are now pushing for transparent pricing, calling on regulatory agencies to intensify monitoring to discourage what they describe as “opportunistic pricing.”
As the advocacy grows, Nigerians are being encouraged to support businesses that adjust their prices fairly and to challenge those that refuse to reflect cost reductions.

amplifying mounting pressure for economic fairness across the nation.
