Popular Nasarawa Political Actor Dies at 52

Popular Nasarawa political figure Senator Godiya Akwashiki has died at the age of 52 after a prolonged illness, family sources confirmed to news agencies on New Year’s Eve. He passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, in a hospital in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the National Assembly on the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform, was a well-known grassroots politician and constituency builder.
Before becoming a senator, he served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, rising to the position of Deputy Speaker and establishing a strong record of local leadership. He was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and made history as the only lawmaker from Nasarawa North to secure two consecutive terms since the state’s creation in 1996.
News of Akwashiki’s passing has drawn heartfelt condolences from political associates and community leaders who described his death as a significant loss to Nasarawa’s political family. While official tribute statements are still emerging, a family source told reporters that his passing “leaves a big vacuum given his commitment to development and empowerment programmes across the senatorial district.”
Colleagues and constituents are expected to release further tributes in the coming days, highlighting his contributions to rural infrastructure, healthcare initiatives, and his deep connection with the grassroots. During his career, Akwashiki was credited with projects such as building and handing over a primary healthcare centre in Nasarawa Eggon, a gesture widely welcomed by the local community.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, the late senator was known not only for his legislative work but also for his people-centred approach to politics.
He is survived by his wife, children, and extended family members.
