The Super Falcons of Nigeria delivered a sensational comeback performance to defeat hosts Morocco 3–2 and clinch their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Rabat on Saturday night.
Trailing 2–0 at halftime, the Falcons rose from the ashes like true champions in front of a stunned Moroccan crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. Goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Florence Ijamilusi, and a late winner from Jennifer Echegini sealed a dramatic and well-deserved victory for Nigeria.
Morocco drew first blood through Ghizlane Chebbak in the 13th minute and doubled their lead via Sanaâ Mssoudy in the 24th. But the second half told a different story.
In the 64th minute, Okoronkwo confidently converted a penalty after a foul on Rasheedat Ajibade. Just seven minutes later, Ijamilusi fired in the equalizer, sending Nigerian fans into wild celebrations.
Then came the magic moment. With just two minutes left on the clock, substitute Jennifer Echegini latched onto a loose ball in the box and smashed home the winner — breaking Moroccan hearts and completing one of the most stunning turnarounds in WAFCON history.
Nigeria had earlier dethroned defending champions South Africa in the semi-finals with a thrilling 2–1 victory. A first-half penalty from Rasheedat Ajibade and a last-gasp winner from Michelle Alozie booked their spot in the final and ended South Africa’s title defense.
Under the leadership of Coach Justine Madugu, the Falcons embarked on a campaign dubbed “Mission X” — aiming for their 10th WAFCON title. They did so in style, displaying tactical discipline, mental toughness, and unity.
“This is a victory for every Nigerian girl who dreams big,” Coach Madugu said after the match. “These ladies gave everything on the pitch and they have made the entire nation proud.”
