TKC Debunks Misrepresentation of Bishop Kukah’s Comments on Christian Persecution in Nigeria

The Kukah Centre (TKC) has dismissed recent reports misrepresenting the views of its founder, His Lordship Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, on the sensitive issue of religious freedom and the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. The organisation said the reports selectively quoted the Bishop in ways that neither reflect his words nor the consistent body of his work spanning five decades.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, TKC expressed concern over the “clear mis-characterisation” of Bishop Kukah’s remarks during two recent engagements: the launch of the 2025 World Report on Religious Freedom at the Vatican on October 21, 2025, and his address at the 46th Supreme Convention of the Knights of St. Mulumba in Kaduna on October 28, 2025.
Contrary to claims that Bishop Kukah downplayed Christian persecution, TKC said the Bishop has always spoken firmly and compassionately about the realities of religiously-motivated violence in Nigeria. Citing his Vatican remarks, the Centre noted that Bishop Kukah explicitly condemned the continued killings across the country, describing the situation as “unacceptable deaths” and warning that government failure to address lingering security problems had created the conditions for what he called “genocide” in some communities.
According to the statement, Bishop Kukah’s remarks in Kaduna were also taken out of context. He reportedly traced the long history of Christian persecution from the time of Jesus Christ and encouraged the faithful to hold fast to their beliefs while promoting justice, solidarity, and healing. TKC said the structure of the Bishop’s presentation made it clear that he sought to validate — not deny — the suffering of Christian communities in northern Nigeria.
“The public interest in this matter is welcome,” TKC said, “but we urge accurate reporting and discourage the persistent misattributions that distort His Lordship’s message.”

The Centre announced that Bishop Kukah’s full speeches and presentation materials have been made available on its website for public access to ensure transparency and prevent further misinformation.
TKC reaffirmed its commitment to advocating religious freedom, calling for zero tolerance for persecution, stronger solidarity with affected communities, and full accountability for perpetrators of violence.
