FG Sets January 1, 2026 Deadline for POS Operators to Register With CAC

The Federal Government has issued a directive mandating all Point of Sale (POS) operators in Nigeria to complete registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on or before January 1, 2026, or face enforcement actions.
The CAC, in a notice released on Friday, raised concerns over the rapid growth of POS businesses operating without legal registration, warning that the trend has heightened financial risks and exposed citizens to unsafe transactions.
According to the Commission, any operator who fails to comply before the deadline will be barred from operation, while security agencies have been authorized to seize unregistered terminals and enforce compliance nationwide.
The notice also cautioned fintech companies aiding unregistered POS operators, stating that such firms may be blacklisted and reported to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for regulatory action.
Part of the statement reads:
“The CAC has observed the rising number of PoS operators running without registration, violating CAMA 2020 and CBN Agent Banking Regulations. This must stop”.
Effective 1 January 2026:
– No PoS operator will be allowed to operate without CAC registration.
– Security agencies will enforce nationwide compliance.
– Unregistered PoS terminals will be seized or shut down.
– Fintechs enabling illegal operations will be placed on a watchlist and reported to the CBN.
All operators are advised to regularise immediately as “Compliance is mandatory.”
The Commission urged existing and new POS business owners to commence registration without delay to avoid sanctions.
