As Matawalle’s bid for governorship of Zamfara is unsuccessful,  state imposed curfew that lasts from dusk until dawn.

Following the election for governor, the government of Zamfara state has instituted a curfew across the entire state. His opponent from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dauda Lawal Dare, was able to defeat Governor Bello Matawalle in their race for reelection. Commissioner for Information Ibrahim Dosara issued a statement in which he explained that the measure had been taken to prevent acts of violence.

The statement reads: “The government of Zamfara state has noticed with dismay, the wanton destruction and vandalisation of government and public property and assets where several innocent citizens are being inflicted with various degrees of injuries in the name of celebration of yesterday’s declaration of Governorship election results.” “Reports available to the government indicate that in lives were lost, houses and personal effects destroyed and shops were burgled. “To guard against these acts, government finds it imperative to impose statewide curfew from 8 pm to 6am until peace is restored. Security agencies are therefore directed to ensure compliance.”

Legit.ng notes that the government of Kano State had taken a similar step after the results of the election were announced. Nasir Gawuna, the deputy governor, had run for office as a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), but he was defeated by Abba Yusuf, a candidate for the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP). Some NNPP supporters did not comply with the curfew that had been declared by the administration of Governor Ganduje to prevent violent celebrations. Instead, they went out into the streets to celebrate the defeat of the ruling party.
