After poor showings by both the Under-23 Men’s National Team (Olympic Eagles) and the Senior Men’s National Team (Super Eagles) in important international matches this week, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has issued an apology to the people of Nigeria. The statement was made public on the Nigeria Football Federation’s website.

The Super Eagles were defeated by the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau in a qualifying match for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Under-23 team was unable to defeat Guinea in the first leg of their final qualifying match for the Africa Cup of Nations for Under-23 teams.

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, expressed his disappointment in the below-par performances, but he also stated that the Federation was committed to working hard to ensure that both teams turn their qualifying games around in a positive way. Gusau extended a “unreserved apology” to the people of Nigeria for the poor performance and reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to reversing the situation in the return matches that will take place early the following week.

Despite the slow starts, Gusau is optimistic that the U-23s will qualify for the AFCON in their return match against Guinea, which will take place on Tuesday, and that the Super Eagles will defeat Guinea Bissau, which will take place on Monday, to return to the top of their qualifying group for the 2023 AFCON.
