Alkali Baba Usman’s removal as the Inspector General of Police, or IGP, was the subject of a lawsuit that was dismissed by an Abuja Federal High Court on Tuesday.
Justice John Omotoso dismissed the lawsuit filed by Michael Sam Idoko, an activist from Abuja, against President Muhammadu Buhari and four other people.
Justice Omotoso cited Section 7(6) of the Police Act 2020 in his ruling, which established a four-year term limit for any Inspector General of Police.

The judge ruled that Alkali Baba Usman’s retirement from the Nigeria Police Force had nothing to do with his appointment because the four-year term is sacred.
Besides, Justice Omotoso said that the plaintiff, who claimed to be a social crusader, had no jurisdiction in instituting the case under the guise of public interest.
He held that the plaintiff failed to establish having any peculiar or special interest over and above other Nigerians.
Justice Omotoso referred to the plaintiff specifically as a busybody and meddlesome interloper, adding that neither was he a serving police officer eligible for appointment nor had he ever applied for the position of IGP. He also denied that he had any legal authority to file the lawsuit.

Idoko filed the lawsuit to contest the legality of the IGP’s continued tenure in office after completing his term with the help of his lawyer, Chief James Ogwu Onoja, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
Later, the plaintiff was not charged with any fees in connection with the lawsuit with the filing number FHC/ CS/ 31/2023.
