Workers in the state were ordered to report to work following a two-day standoff with the state government over the non-payment of arrears of salaries and pensions and alleged interference in the election of the state officers of the congress, according to a statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero.
Ajaero claimed in the statement that the NLC’s decision to call off the strike was motivated by the interventions of several notable individuals as well as the desire to prevent any interference with Imo state’s State Assembly election on Saturday.
“The strike suspension is expected to last two weeks during which time the state government and its agencies are expected to meet the demands of the state’s workers,” he said.

Failure to take advantage of the window provided by the strike’s suspension will result in the strike’s resumption with “more ferocity,” according to Ajaero.
According to NLC, it started the industrial action on Wednesday in Imo state to protest the non-payment of 20 months’ worth of unpaid salaries to its members.
The use of state tools by the state government to terrorize workers was also mentioned in the statement as the reason for the action.
The labor movement added that the state-wide strike was brought on by the state government’s brigandage of workers who peacefully gathered on Tuesday to hold the State Delegates Conference of the Congress, in conjunction with security agencies.
