Phone Theft on the Rise: Worshippers, Residents Lament Brazen Crimes in Nasarawa

A disturbing trend of phone theft has been reported in Nasarawa State, with worshippers and residents falling victim to brazen crimes.
In a shocking incident, Abubakar Yusuf, a 21-year-old worshipper, had his phone stolen from his pocket while praying in a mosque in Akwanga Local Government Area on Friday, May 16, 2025.
Yusuf, who hails from Angwan-Dogo Community in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, narrated his ordeal to TEC News, explaining that he discovered his phone was missing after prayers.
“I had my phone in my pocket when I entered the mosque, but when I wanted to use it after prayers, it was gone,” Yusuf said. “I met one of the caretakers of the mosque, but he said there was nothing they could do since the worshippers had already left.”
This incident is not an isolated case, as several residents have reported similar experiences. Joseph Renkre, a barber, told TEC News that his phone was stolen in his shop.
“The phone thieves are merciless,” Renkre said. “They steal our phones in this harsh economy where phones are highly expensive.”
Joseph Ola, another resident, reported losing a phone to thieves in 2023 and two more in 2024.

“They are wicked,” Ola said. “They tear your window net at night and find a way to remove your phone if they can see its location.”
The rise in phone theft has left many residents feeling vulnerable and frustrated. The authorities have been urged to take decisive action to address the growing concern.
In the meantime, residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to secure their valuables.
Worshipers are also advised to remember that criminals are on the increase and can be found anywhere, including religious worship centers or gathering, therefore, the need for necessary precautions is strongly recommended.
