Judge sends EFCC boss Bawa to Kuje prison for disobeying court orders

Abdulrasheed Bawa, the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was jailed on Monday for disobeying court orders.

In his ruling, Justice R.O. Ayoola of the Kogi State High Court approved the EFCC chairman’s request to be committed to prison for disobeying a court order issued on November 30, 2022, directing the EFCC chairman to produce the case’s applicant, Ali Bello.

The court further ordered the arrest of Bawa and his detention in Kuje Prison for the ensuing 14 days while he cleared himself of the contempt.

Ali Bello had taken Bawa to court for unlawfully detaining and arresting him; after the court ruled in Bello’s favor, the EFCC charged Bawa with money laundering three days later.

“That the Applicant’s arrest and detention by the First and Second Respondents on November 29, 2022, in defiance of an active court order and without a warrant of arrest or being informed of the offense for which he was arrested, is unlawful, unconstitutional, and violates his right to personal liberty and the dignity of human person protected by Chapter IV of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the complaint reads.
