Await Tribunal Verdict Before Recognizing Tinubu’s Victory,” Obi Retorts to US Secretary of State

Peter Obi, who ran as the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the elections that were just recently concluded, has questioned the basis of the phone conversation that took place between Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, and Bola Tinubu, the President-elect. Bola Tinubu is currently in the process of assuming the office of President.

It was reported that on Friday, Obi sent out a series of tweets in which he emphasized the significance of waiting for the decision of the presidential election tribunal before granting legitimacy.

Obi tweeted, “There is still a lack of clarity on the basis of the call that U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken made to APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on May 16, 2023.” Blinken was the secretary of state of the United States. The rule of law is both the most fundamental democratic principle and an essential component of democratic societies.

In a phone call earlier this week, Blinken had spoken with Tinubu about his dedication to furthering efforts to improve relations between the United States and Nigeria. During the time that Tinubu was in France, the call was made.

During the call, Blinken reaffirmed his dedication to bolstering the partnership between the United States and Nigeria under the administration of the incoming President-elect.

Concerns have been voiced by both the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party in response to the telephone conversation that took place between the incoming US Secretary of State and the outgoing President-elect.

Atiku Abubakar, who is contesting Tinubu’s victory at the tribunal, has criticized the Secretary of State’s assurances of bilateral cooperation, citing contradictions with the United States’ previous stance on Nigeria’s general election as the basis for his criticism.

Abubakar made reference to a statement that the United States government issued on March 2, in which they acknowledged the complaints and frustrations expressed by some Nigerians regarding the conduct of the presidential election and the technical flaws in the voting process. The statement was issued in response to the fact that some Nigerians had expressed their dissatisfaction with the election and the technical flaws in the voting process.

Yunusa Tanko, who serves as the Chief Spokesman for the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, has also expressed concern regarding Blinken’s discussion of bilateral relations with Tinubu.
