INEC declares Kebbi governorship election inconclusive

Inconclusive results in the Kebbi governor’s race have been proclaimed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In 20 of the State’s 21 LGAs, the INEC Collation and Returning Officer, Yusuf Sa’idu, declared the governorship election inconclusive, citing “massive vote cancellation and overvoting.”

According to the returning officer, 792,234 votes were cast, of which 18,204 were invalid. 2,032,041 people were registered to vote, whereas 760,438 votes were actually cast.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) received 342,980 votes, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) received 388,258 votes, a difference of 45,278 votes, according to Sa’idu.

Sa’idu cited the Electoral Act 2022 when he said, “We totaled the number of collected PVCs in those polling units (where votes were annulled) and it came to a total of 91,829. The two major political parties in this election, the APC and PDP, received 388,258 and 342,980 votes, respectively, when the results were checked. The difference is 45,278 when we look at it.

“The presiding officer shall annul the election result in any polling unit where the number of votes cast exceeds the number of registered voters in that polling unit. According to section 51’s subsection three, if an election’s results are declared invalid in accordance with subsection 2, there cannot be a return for the election until a new election is held in the polling place in question.
