FG Clarifies Subject Choice Under New Senior Secondary Curriculum as WAEC Registration Continues

The Federal Ministry of Education has issued fresh clarification on subject selection under the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum, following what it described as widespread questions, concerns and misinterpretation among students, parents and school operators across the country.
In a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the Ministry stated that there is no subject restriction of any kind under the current curriculum, and students are free to select from all approved subjects irrespective of discipline, provided such choices are guided by parents, counsellors or school authorities.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, FA MedS, CON, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Sa’id Suwaiba Ahmad, explained that the revised curriculum was deliberately designed to be flexible and student-centred, allowing science students to choose subjects from the arts or social sciences and vice-versa. The goal, according to them, is to encourage diverse academic interests and career pathways.
The Ministry also addressed confusion surrounding the subject previously known as Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It confirmed that the subject has been renamed Digital Technology, clarifying that the change is in name only and does not alter the curriculum content. Students who have offered ICT in the past remain fully eligible to register for Digital Technology in WAEC and other examinations.
On trade subjects, the Ministry disclosed that six have been approved under the curriculum. Students may register for any of them where they have been taught the subject, but those who have not been exposed to any of the six are not obligated to register for a trade option as a third subject.
Reassuring the public of seamless WAEC registration nationwide, the Ministry urged stakeholders especially parents, private school owners, counsellors and examination bodies, to rely only on verified information and to provide proper guidance to students.
It added that the Federal Government remains committed to smooth and well-coordinated execution of the new curriculum across Nigeria as registration progresses.
