Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the incumbent governor of Lagos State and a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been declared the winner of the governorship election that took place on Saturday, March 18.
After tallying 762,134 votes, Sanwo-Olu emerged victorious, defeating his closest opponent, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party, who tallied 312 327 votes. Sanwo-Olu received 762,134 votes. Olajide Adediran, also known as Jandor, the candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), finished a distant third with 62,449 votes.
“I declare that the governorship candidate of the APC, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, having satisfied the requirements of the law by scoring 25 per cent in two-thirds of the local government areas in the state, and also scoring the highest number of valid votes cast is here today to claim victory in this election,” said Prof. Adenike Temidayo Oladiji, the state Collation/Returning Officer for INEC in Ondo State and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology
As a response to the result, Mrs. Dayo Ekong, who was serving as both the Chairman of the LP in Lagos State and an LP agent at the collation center, declared that the result was invalid. She referred to the entire electoral process as a farce while she was singing the second stanza of the national anthem. She said, “This is an election that is laced with violence, and people were massively disenfranchised.” Because the INEC has lowered its standards, the Labour Party is rejecting the results in their entirety.
