Gabriel Agabi, a lecturer in the University of Calabar’s Philosophy Department, was detained by security personnel in the Cross Rivers State for having access to 17 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) voting machines.
Agabi, who was detained on February 26th, was also charged with pretending to be Dominic Abakedi, the collation officer for the Yache ward in the state’s Yala Local Government Area, according to the News Agency Of Nigeria (NAN).
At the time of his arrest, Agabi was donning an INEC reflective jacket.
According to reports, BVAS machines weren’t programmed for the ward where he was arrested when he was picked up at the Okpoma collation center.

According to reports, Agabi was later brought to the Ogoja INEC office where he admitted to impersonating Abakedi. He was then reportedly taken by the police to the Ogoja Area Command for additional investigation by the CID unit.
According to NAN, Zannah Shettima, the regional commissioner of police in charge of the elections, declined to comment.
